Movement in old age: never too late for an active life!
Vogelsbergkreis, Deutschland - On January 10, 2025, Dominic Günther, the movement coordinator of the Vogelsberg district, announced a new series of lectures entitled "Movement in old age". This series aims to emphasize the importance of physical activity for seniors. In the past two years, Günther has visited over 20 senior afternoons in the Vogelsberg district and thus gained valuable insights into the needs of older people.
Günther emphasizes that physical activity is essential to maintain the quality of life and independence from seniors, reduce pain and to promote mental fitness. In the lectures, exercises are presented that help the seniors to move safely in everyday life. The important factors for movement in old age include the health system, the biological age of the participants as well as fall prophylaxis and the local club landscape.

Furthermore, Günther recommends avoiding long phases of seating and interrupting them through regular physical activities. The Federal Center for Health Education (BZGA) supports this initiative and recommends that seniors should plan at least 2.5 hours of endurance -oriented movement per week, which corresponds to about 21 minutes a day. In addition, strength and balance exercises should be carried out on two or more days a week. BZGA has used that health -promoting measures, as they are conveyed in the series of lectures, can have positive effects on the mobility and quality of life of older people, as announced in a press release of September 27, 2024 after the international day of the older people on October 1, 2024. The BZGA recommends a health promotion program that includes topics such as movement, alcohol and medication consumption as well as hearing health. In this context, the BZGA offers various activities and additional offers under the “Get Healthy and Active older” program that are tailored to the needs of people aged 65 and over.
