Oil spill over 30 kilometers: Police investigate accident!
The police in the Hildesheim district are dealing with a spectacular incident: a 32-year-old man from Bodenwerder caused an oil slick that was more than 30 kilometers long with his vehicle. According to information from NDR.de The oil slick was discovered during the accident investigation on December 6th after a VW Fox collided with a truck in Burgstemmen. Fortunately, the 49-year-old driver of the VW Fox only suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The investigation revealed that the 32-year-old had previously poured heating oil into barrels. At least one of the barrels turned out to be leaking, which led to a massive loss of oil on the rain-soaked road. The oil trail stretched from Burgstemmen to Bodenwerder. The fire department was quickly called in to clear the danger area, but it turned out that the oil had already seeped into the ground. The Hildesheim police station informed that due to the immediate proximity to the Leine, there is a risk of contamination of the river, which is why a specialist company has to remove the affected area.
The investigation against the 32-year-old perpetrator is ongoing, and it remains to be seen what legal consequences await him after his negligence caused such a level of environmental danger. According to estimates, the material damage from the accident amounts to around 4,500 euros. These incidents highlight the need for good safety practices when handling hazardous substances.
