Power measurements against the flames: forest fire in the Rax area demands everyone!

Schwarzau im Gebirge, Österreich - A devastating forest fire in the Rax Schneeberg area has kept the emergency services on trot since Saturday. According to the reports of 5min.at and Salzburg24.at broke out the fire in the morning and was probably caused by a burning vehicle. With strong winds, the flames spread quickly to an adjacent forest, which the fire brigade presented with an immense challenge.

The extinguishing work is "exhausting"; District commander Josef Huber reported intensive commitment in the steep terrain. Up to 340 firefighters could be mobilized on Sunday, supported by five extinguishing helicopters. Despite this massive mobilization, the end of the fight was initially not in sight. On Monday, the emergency services moved out with thermal imaging cameras to locate and extinguish hidden embers. There were already minor injuries among the fire brigade members, including waved ankles.

On Sunday afternoon, it was possible to control the fire so far that the affected area could be limited to about eight hectares. Nevertheless, the operation remains complex and the fire brigade is on the highest alert. The prevailing conditions require full attention and constant support from air and soil units.
