Görlitz is planning a bold fire department renovation: 7.8 million euros from the EU!

Görlitz is facing a comprehensive restructuring of its professional fire department! Anja Weigel, who has been head of the professional fire department since July 1, 2022, announced ambitious plans to make the fire department fit for the future. “We want to have a location with development potential that is secured for the next 100 years,” explained Weigel. The first step in this direction will be the renovation of a building on Gobbinstrasse that has been vacant for years and was formerly part of the capacitor factory. The city has already received 7.8 million euros in funding from the EU ERDF program, of which two million euros will be used specifically for the fire department Saxon newspaper reported.

The path to the new fire department

The plan calls for a total of four phases. First, the building on Gobbinstrasse is to be converted into a fire department technical center. This also means that the fire brigade remains ready for action at all times. Görlitz Mayor Benedikt Hummel confirmed that the city is in the final phase of purchase negotiations for adjacent areas in order to create enough space for the necessary new buildings. “We expect that the city council will be able to make a decision at the beginning of 2025,” said Hummel.

The urgently needed new vehicle halls are to be built in the third step. According to Anja Weigel, the fire department needs at least seven to nine parking spaces for modern emergency vehicles that must meet today's safety standards. There are also extensive plans in the pipeline to demolish the old fire department facility on Krölstrasse goerlitz.de reported. The timetable for the first phases of construction calls for EU funds to be spent by 2027, with the entire process dependent on funding and no quick fixes in sight. As the first female head of the Görlitz fire department, Anja Weigel brings a breath of fresh air to the institution and, together with her team, pursues the goal of mastering the challenges of the present and future together.
