Gas smell on Christmas market: fire brigade in use against ignorance!
At the Christmas market in Helmstedt, there was dramatic scenes on Friday morning, November 29. Shortly after 10 a.m., passers -by reported a strong smell of gas in the area of the marketplace. To ensure that the population is not in danger, the entire Christmas market was immediately cleared and cordoned off. The HELMSTEDT fire brigade immediately moved out with several squads to explore the location and to check the various booths in which gas bottles are stored, among other things. Despite intensive research, however, the emergency services could not find the cause of the gas smell and finally handed over the site to the responsible energy supplier, such as news38 reported.
The situation was further difficult by the behavior of some passers -by, which ignored the areas locked with flutter tape. "True to the motto, 'I always go here long' or 'I just have to quickly here' the barriers were ignored," said operations manager Alexander Weis. Such behaviors are not only a disregard for security measures, but in the worst case can also be life -threatening. It was only about two hours later, at 12:06 p.m., that another gas smell was reported in the area of a nearby pharmacy on Magdeburger Berg. This smell probably came from the pharmacy's ventilation system, which resulted in a renewed evacuation of the building. Again, after extensive control by the fire brigade, no clear cause could be determined, which rated the security situation as stable, as well as reported.
The HELMSTEDT fire brigade was used for about two hours. Fortunately, the situation could be brought under control without further incidents, and market visitors got away with a horror, while the emergency services conscientiously fulfilled their obligation to defend the danger.
