Donausch swimming in Lauingen: A bright experience for young and old!
A spectacular event recently took place in Lauingen: the Danube swimming, a traditional nightly spectacle, attracted around 200 brave people who plunged into the cold floods of the Danube. For Dieter Nägele, the mayor of Gundelfingen, it was an exciting premiere in a wetsuit that was filled with warm water to prepare for the cold. "The cold is pretty crisp," he noticed when he arrived at the outdoor territory. The event, which has been organized by the DLRG since 1971, had to be canceled last year due to bad weather, but in 2024 she experienced a terrific comeback. According to Christian Mack, the district chairman, Danube swimming was not only a sporting challenge, but also an expression of community among the participants who came from various organizations, including the Bundeswehr.
torch sea and festive atmosphere
The impressive route of 1.5 kilometers stretched from the territory to the Lauinger Danube Bridge, and the swimmers dived into an enchanting sea of lights. The spectators on the bridge experienced a fascinating spectacle when the light sources danced on the water surface. Dillingen's mayor Frank Kunz, who also participated in the event, praised the special experiences that the Danube swim offers year after year. While the swimmers came out of the water, the DLRG youth team sweetened the evening with freshly baked waffles and the music group Hüttagoischd’r created a festive atmosphere.
The gala start of the evening, according to the mayor Nägele, was a real dream: "The sight of the Danube in the shine of light is a dream. And you feel really good afterwards," he said when he got a hot mulled wine after a strenuous swim. Thanks to the support of around 50 volunteers, the technical relief organization and the fire brigade, the safety of the participants was guaranteed. A big thank you to these teams, without whose commitment such a great event would not be possible, Mack stated. Lauingen, located in the picturesque district of Dillingen, remains a place that combines tradition with liveliness and strengthens the community, while the participants and spectators experience the shimmering Danube.
