Morerod becomes the new president of the Swiss Bishops' Conference - a fresh start!
In a significant turn for the Catholic Church in Switzerland, Charles Morerod **, the Bishop of Lausanne-Geneva-Friborg, was elected today as the new chairman of the ** Swiss Bishops' Conference (SBK) **. This happened at the end of the three -day general assembly in Engelberg. Morerod, a 63-year-old Dominican, performed in this role from 2016 to 2018 and now takes over the position of the President of the Baselstadt Bishop ** Felix Gmür **, whose term of office could not be extended according to the statutes, as*Kathpress*reported.
In the most turbulent time for the Swiss church since the past few years, Morerod has faced a major challenge: the revelations about abuse cases and the associated warnings of the Vatican have shaken the trust of many creditors. In the past few months, the results of a pilot study by the University of Zurich have provided violent discussions about abuse matters, while at the same time some bishops were suspected. Interestingly, it was also investigated against Morerod, whereby the Vatican only found formal irregularities in October, but found no criminal information or cover -ups, as * bischoefe.ch * explained.
renewed responsibility and role in the Bishops' Conference
Morerod, born on October 28, 1961, has devoted himself in various functions of theological teaching since he entered the preacher order in 1982 and with its ordination in 1988. After his doctorate in theology and philosophy, he worked as a professor and rector of renowned institutions, including the Angelicum in Rome. His experience as a leader and the challenges that he now faces make him a formative figure in the future of the church in Switzerland.
