Snow, rain and storm: change of weather threatens all over Austria!

Today, on March 27, 2025, a high -pressure area in Austria ensures mild temperatures. Nevertheless, the weather forecast indicates an upcoming change that could go hand in hand with considerable rain and snow at the weekend. Thursday starts with isolated raindrops and snowfall, mainly above 1,200 meters, with the clouds loosening up from the west during the day. It stays dry, especially in East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia, while the maximum temperatures fluctuate between 8 and 17 degrees. A lively to strong wind blows from northern directions.

On Friday, the day initially runs friendly with a lot of sunshine, while local fog fields are possible. However, clouds are increasingly forming, especially in the eastern half, which leads to rain in the second half of the day from Southeast Styria to the Weinviertel. In contrast, it stays friendly in Vorarlberg, Upper Austria and Oberkärnten. The temperatures rise to values between 10 and 19 degrees, while they are between -2 and 0 degrees at 2,000 meters.

changeover of weather and effects

For Monday, changeable weather is predicted on the alpine north side, with repeated rain and porridge showers. The snow border will be between 700 and 1,300 meters. Some showers are expected in the east, while in the south there are usually longer sunny sections to be expected, even if occasionally short shower can occur. A lively to strong northwest wind will be noticeable again, and the temperatures vary between 4 and 12 degrees, in the south even up to 15 degrees.

These weather conditions are closely related to the pressure conditions in the atmosphere. Air pressure is the power that exerts the weight of the air onto the earth's surface and varies depending on the height, temperature and humidity. A higher air pressure, typically found in high -pressure areas, leads to stable weather conditions, while low pressure areas often bring changeable weather with precipitation and wind. These high and low pressure areas significantly influence the weather in Europe.

air pressure and weather events

As a rule, high and low pressure areas move from west to east and can change the weather significantly within a very short time. While high -pressure areas usually provide sunny weather, low pressure areas often bring rain and storm. When the Azoren high extends to the northeast, it distracts low pressure areas towards Pol, which leads to milder temperatures in Central Europe. Conversely, the pressure of the Azores high to the south can lead to cold fronts from the north to Central Europe.

These complex interactions between high and low pressure areas are often the reason for extreme weather events that can occur in Central Europe. A temperature difference of up to 20 degrees Celsius between the air masses can even cause orcan.

In the coming days, the Austrians can adjust to an exciting weather change. While the temperatures still appear mild at the beginning of the week, the announced rain and snowfall could significantly change the landscape until the weekend.
