Russian evaluation of the Trump administration: Musk in focus

While the designated US President Donald Trump continues to attract attention with his nominations for key positions in his upcoming administration, the Russians try to understand the effects of these vocations on Moscow. Russian state media have produced various talk shows in the past few days to explain to the Russian population what the new administration could mean for Russia and the war in Ukraine.

The reactions to Trump’s nominations

Evgeny Popov, a well-known face on Russian state television and Duma MP, used his show, which he moderated together with his wife to critically deal with Mike Waltz. Waltz was nominated by Trump as a national security advisor and previously expressed concerns about the continuing support of the congress for Ukraine. He supports a peace plan for Ukraine, but does not rule out pressure on Russia and President Vladimir Putin. In an interview with NPR, Waltz described Russia as "a petrol station with nuclear weapons".

Waltz and the possible threat to Moscow

Popov quickly pointed out the potential threat to Moscow: "(Waltz) suggested that the Republican Congress use more American drones in the Black Sea, and, as Trump had threatened, praised 'Putin's Kremlin'. This is called the Russoph stable team or the American Dream team."

Olga Skabeeva and the positive assessment by Tulsi Gabbard

In the studio, Olga Skabeeva, Popov's wife, showed a little more positive compared to the nomination of the former democratic congressions Tulsi Gabard as director of the national intelligence services. Skabeeva emphasized that Gabard was "clear about the reasons for Russia's special operation in Ukraine" and praised her criticism of the US support for Kiev.

difficult questions about the future

Elena, who was traveling with her daughter, also expressed a positive comment about Musk: "Everything he did is very interesting, and the fact that he has such ideas is fundamentally good for development." The status of the Technik-Tycoon as a wealthy lateral thinker who bought X (formerly Twitter) and is planning civil space travel makes him more familiar to the Russians than other high-ranking candidates.

When they were asked about the new administration and future relationships between old opponents, the answers were split. Sergey said: "Trump said, 'I will do everything for America', but he didn't mention Russia." Vladimir Kostyukevich, on the other hand, expressed that Trump made a good impression on him as a politician and referred to his age and the apparent energy - possibly a top against the outgoing president Joe Biden.

dealing with the Ukraine conflict

The sensitive topic of Ukraine, which Putin commissioned in February 2022, expressed the wish that the war would end. However, many were not sure how Trump could do this. Elena said: "I don't know how Donald Trump can solve it. But I would really like it to be solved as soon as possible and in the most peaceful way, through negotiations and not by the deeds that happen now."

Tatiyana meanwhile hoped for peace and spoke warmly about Ukraine: "This is a good question. Ukraine is our fraternal nation. It has always been like that. And although the relationships are now so complicated, we love Ukraine as before, they are our brothers, our relatives." Kostyuukevich had even more hope: "I don't know whether Trump will stay with his line. But I hope that there will be a good agreement between Russia and Ukraine. And in general to stop this madness that happens in the world, well, in Israel, Palestine and Ukraine Russia."
