Drone attack on UN Vehicle at Inspection Ukrainian nuclear power plant
A armored vehicle of the Nuclear Supervisory Authority of the UN was hit by a drone attack on Tuesday when it was on the way to inspect a Ukrainian nuclear power plant. President Wolodymyr Selenskyj blends Russia responsible for the attack.
Details of the attack on the UN vehicle
The attack to which Russia has not yet made a statement occurred while the vehicle was driving in a convoy to Zaporizhzhia nuclear power. This is part of the efforts of the International Atomic Energy Organization (IAEA) to secure the system, as there are fears that it could get into the Kreuzfeuer of Russia's war against Ukraine, which could trigger a nuclear disaster.
consequences and reactions
The IAEA explained that the attack destroyed the rear of its armored vehicle, but the two people remained unharmed. "The driver of a second IAEA vehicle in the convoy watched the Kamikaze drone came from behind and the target vehicle hit," said the agency.
Selenskyj, who shared a picture of the damaged vehicle on the platform X, blamed the Russians for the attack and claimed that the vehicle was intentionally targeted.
warning by the IAEA
"This attack clearly shows how Russia deals with everything that has to do with international law, global institutions and security. The Russians can have been no less than aware of what their goal was," said Selenskyj.
The General Director of IAEA, Rafael Mariano Grossi, also condemned the attack. "I have said in the past that an attack on a nuclear power plant is not acceptable. The attack on those who take care of the nuclear security of these systems is also absolutely unacceptable," says Grossi.
concern about the safety of the nuclear system
The violent struggles that broke out in the first days of the war near the Zaporizhzhia facility triggered fears from a nuclear incident and led to convicting statements from the international community. Since then the iaea repeatedly warned that the security of the site is threatened by shelling, air strikes, lack of personnel, working conditions and the loss of external power supply.
Current control and developments
The power plant in south of Ukraine has been under Russian control since March 2022. Ukraine has repeatedly accused Russia since the takeover of acting ruthlessly near the system by using it as a protective shield for troops and heavy weapons.
After the drone attack on Tuesday, the IAEA said that its staff finally reached the nuclear power plant to change personnel.
