On the continuously against loneliness: Asylum seekers are fighting on the Bibby Stockholm
An asylum seeker fights against loneliness on a British migrant ship.
In the middle of the rough waters of Portland, Great Britain, Salah, a young Somali asylum seeker, lives on Bibby Stockholm. Here he shares a small room with 411 other men while waiting for his fate. The oppressive tightness and the uncertainty about his future transform his room into a battlefield against the dark thoughts of depression.
In order to escape the paralyzing feeling of isolation, Salah discovers the power of running. He joins a local running club where he can escape gray everyday life for a short time. This sporting activity becomes his ray of hope, a moment of freedom in the middle of the oppressive circumstances.
a new way to hope
But Salah is not only satisfied with running. He also volunteers in a youth center and learns that life in the United Kingdom is very different than he had imagined. These experiences open up new perspectives for him and help him organize his thoughts.
The tension increases when the day of his interview is closer to the home office. Salah's future is on the brink, and with it the fate of the Bibby Stockholm. Will he get the chance of a new life or does he only have the return to the uncertainty?
The documentary "Last Days of the Bibby Stockholm" by Sue Sudbury and Dave Young illuminates the challenges and hopes of migrants at this floating asylum center. It is a moving story about resilience and the incessant struggle for a better life.
