Gerb leads elections, but political instability remains!
Bulgaria's Gerb party leads, but the majority remains unmatched!
In a dramatic election scenario, the Bulgarian Gerb party, led by former prime minister Boyko Borisov, has its nose ahead with the latest parliamentary elections. According to a recent survey by Alpha Research, the party has received 26.4 percent of the votes, but that is not enough to end political instability in the country. The reform party "We continue the change" (PP) follows 14.9 percent, while the pro-Russian ultra-nationalist party "rebirth" ends in third place with 12.9 percent.
This was the seventh election in just four years, and the Bulgarians are frustrated with the continuing political blockade. The elections became necessary after the parties were unable to find a consensus for a coalition government after the undecided election on June 9th. In a parliament that is shaped by fragmentation, it will be a major challenge for Gerb to find suitable partners. According to the surveys, Gerb could win 74 seats in the 240 seats, while PP 42 and rebirth could receive 36 seats.
political uncertainty remains
The voter participation seems to have risen slightly and was 35 percent an hour before the polling stations were closed, compared to only 34 percent in the last election in June - the lowest value since the end of communism. Many Bulgarians are concerned about political paralysis, which has been in place since 2020, plunged as massive anti-corruption protests Borisov's cabinet. "What was to be expected has occurred more or less ... I think we will have more elections," said voters Vassil Vasilev, 60, after the survey results became known.
The need for a stable government is urgent to mobilize the EU funding for the ailing infrastructure of the country and to promote accession to the euro zone. The planned accession to the euro zone has already been postponed twice due to failed inflation goals, and the new appointment is set on January 25, 2025. "Gerb has the responsibility to form a government, let's see what they propose," said Nikolai Denkov, former prime minister and member of the pp.
