Freedom in Syria: A Syria's dream finally becomes true!

The political situation in Syria has achieved a dramatic turning point: after over 53 years of maintaining power by the Assad regime, which was characterized by arbitrariness, corruption and brutal oppression, a new morning now shines on the horizon. On Sunday not only the Syrians celebrated in their homeland, but also many exile in Europe, such as the Mahmoud Aljardi, who lives in Austria, who has fled from Syrian Massiaf. "Today I celebrated my daughter's sixth birthday and the end of the dictatorship," said Aljardi, while looking at the significant changes in his home country.

The end of an era

Bashar al-Assad, who took over power after the death of his father Hafis, led Syria into a brutal civil war that cost hundreds of thousands and moved millions to flee. Despite the initial promise of reform, he quickly returned to authoritarian methods and was able to stay in power for a long time through harassment and international ignorance. His regime finally collapsed in 2022, which brought many Syrians new hope, such as Hussain Abbas, who fled from Idlib in 2015: "The era of the Assad regime is over. Now we have to fight for peace and justice." He indicates that the crushing of the old structures is an immense challenge, since the infrastructure in Syria has been severely destroyed and the return from exile is currently assessed as hardly possible.
With the fall of the regime, the return of the Syrian refugees came into discussion. "I hope that the Austrian government looks at the situation of the Syrian refugees humanly and allows them to visit their relatives without having to be afraid of losing their status," says Abbas.

The Syrians in Europe are optimistic that the military presence and brutality that terrorized the country for decades have finally come to an end. Aljardi is determined to spread the truths about the horrors of the regime and to draw attention to the still existing problems, such as the situation of the prisoners in the notorious prisons. "We urgently need international help to help people in Syria," said Aljardi, while referring to the sad fates of families who had to wait for a long time for the return of their relatives who opposed the regime.

The latest political upheaval also means for Syria that it is faced with the challenge of restoring security and the rule of law so that trust and stability can return in society, according to many Syrians and supporters. The first steps have already been launched to ensure the security of the citizens, but the path is long and stony.
