UN demands patience: Return of Syrian refugees must be safe and voluntary!
The world looks spellbound on Syria! After the dramatic fall of President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday, which marks the end of a more than 50-year rule of the Al Assad family, the situation in the country is anything but stable. Filippo Grandi, the United Nations' high -ranking refugee commissioner, calls for patience and vigilance, while several European countries expose their asylum decisions to Syrian refugees.
"The return must be voluntary and safe," emphasizes Grandi in an urgent explanation. The situation in Syria remains "uncertain", and the return of millions of refugees who fled from the brutal civil war should not be rushed.
European countries pull the emergency brake
Just one day after the fall of al-Assad, Germany, France, Austria, Belgium, Belgium and other European countries have suspended the decisions about Syrians asylum applications. Grandi warns: "Patience and vigilance are necessary in the hope that the developments on site will be positive." The return of the refugees must be based on informed decisions so that they can feel safe.
The Syrian opposition has already called for Syrians to return abroad and help to rebuild the country. "Syria awaits you," said one of the first explanations after the dictator's fall. But the reality looks different: the uncertainty about the new rulers in Syria remains.
political tensions in Europe
During Germany, which houses the largest Syrian population outside the Middle East, and other governments closely observe developments, Austria signals that it could soon send refugees back to Syria. Political tensions cook up! Far-Right politicians are loudly demanding returns and showing themselves dissatisfied with the celebrations of the Syrians in Germany who celebrate the fall of al-Assads.
Alice Weidel from the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany is contemptuous: "Anyone who celebrates 'Free Syria' in Germany obviously has no reason to flee anymore." However, a spokesman for the Federal Foreign Office in Germany admits that the end of the Assad regime is unfortunately not a guarantee of peaceful developments in the future.
Amnesty International raises the alarm and criticizes the suspicions of the asylum decisions: "The human rights situation in Syria is completely unclear." The return of the refugees remains a hot topic that causes excitement in both Syria and Europe.
