Road safety in Europe

This tragic situation sheds light on overall road safety in Europe. Every year, thousands of people lose their lives or are seriously injured in traffic accidents. Although the number of road deaths in the EU has been falling in recent years, there were still 22,800 road deaths in 2019. According to Europarl.europa.eu, preliminary figures show that 18 EU member states have recorded record low fatalities. However, it is unclear how the pandemic-related traffic declines will affect accident numbers.

For example, Sweden has the safest roads with only 18 traffic deaths per 1 million inhabitants, while Romania reported the highest rate in 2020 with 85 traffic deaths per 1 million inhabitants. These statistics illustrate how important it is to continue working to improve road safety in order to avoid tragic accidents like those in Weißenstein.
