Storms in Tyrol: trees fall, thousands without power!

Late on Sunday afternoon, June 15, 2025, a violent thunderstorm in Tyrol brought the end of a heat wave and caused significant damage in several communities. The fire brigades were extremely challenged due to the adverse weather conditions. In Baumkirchen, Innsbruck-Land district, a large tree fell on a residential building, fortunately without any injuries being reported. The Baumkirchen volunteer fire department and the Hall fire department were immediately deployed to repair the damage. At the same time, fallen trees caused various short-term road closures, including on the L297 near the commercial area in Aschau and on the Götzener Landesstraße (L 12) between Götzens and Völs.

In total, several trees were uprooted in the Oberland, and the fire department also had to intervene in other communities. The communities of Wörgl, Kirchbichl, Angath, Angerberg and Stummerberg were particularly affected, where several thousand people were temporarily without electricity. There was also smoke development in the Wörgl substation, which further complicated the situation. Fortunately, most power outages were resolved after 6 p.m., meaning residents were able to get power restored fairly quickly.

Intensive fire brigade operations

The amount of operations triggered by the severe weather situation was impressive. In addition to the incidents in Baumkirchen and the other affected communities, cellars in Jenbach, Schwaz district, also had to be pumped out. Another incident occurred in Hatting in which several roof tiles came loose from a town roof. The fire brigades from Hatting and Telfs secured the rest with a turntable ladder to avert further danger.

The weather-related incidents in Tyrol are in the context of a series of unbelievable weather events in Europe in 2023. This year there have already been heavy rains, which led to floods in various regions. Lower Austria and Styria were particularly affected, where rivers overflowed their banks, causing significant property damage and evacuations. The extreme heat with temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius also increased the risk of forest fires and gave people in the region a challenging time, which is now being put under additional strain by the storm events.

In view of these recurring weather phenomena, it is important for the population to be aware of possible severe weather warnings and the risks. In its current blog, the insurance company Allianz points out the need to prepare for severe weather and take appropriate precautionary measures.
