Austrians give away billions: Why switching to electricity is worth it!

Austrian households leave around 2.6 billion euros unused every year because they stay loyal to their electricity provider instead of switching. This was provided by the tariff comparison portal perspective firmly. There was a short-term increase in the switching rate at the beginning of the year, which only increased by 0.8 percent to 4.6 percent compared to the previous year. Many, around 95.4 percent, still do not change their provider and therefore miss out on significant savings. Households that changed their electricity provider via durchblicker at the end of the year saved an average of 670 euros.

Stefan Spiegelhofer, energy expert at durchblicker, explains: “The Austrians are traditionally reluctant to change and are among the bottom performers in Europe.” Compared to Spain, where around one in five households changes provider every year, willingness in Austria remains noticeably low. When it comes to annual billing, many households face additional payments or higher prescriptions. Anyone who compares and switches today can significantly reduce their costs.

New tariffs and providers in focus

Switching to cheaper tariffs pays off because many providers attract new customers with attractive discounts. A recent study by Test.de shows that there are several recommended providers who often offer cheap 12-month tariffs between October 18 and November 8, 2024. Providers such as Klick Energie and PurPur Energie have stood out during this period. Klick Energie in particular offers a comprehensive price guarantee, while PurPur Energie offers a green electricity tariff without an official seal.

Additionally, it is recommended to keep an eye on current gas prices as markets may fluctuate. It might make sense to switch to a fixed price tariff to remain unaffected by the current price fluctuations. Before signing a contract, consumers should definitely compare their options among the different providers and take current customer reviews into account in order to avoid unpleasant surprises.
