Mike Nahar, a former basketball coach from Heidenheim, has been enjoying the tropical life in Suriname for almost four months. The move to Paramaribo, the capital of the smallest independent country in South America, was a welcome break for Nahar and his wife Silke to discover new roots and leave everyday life behind. "We are enthusiastic like on the first day," said Nahar about the restart in Suriname, where he also explored his family roots because his father comes from here. The original goal was to relax for a year and to recharge your batteries.

Advent in the jungle

Christmas spend the Nahars very differently than usual. Instead of traditional winter clothing, they celebrate at 32 degrees and sunny weather. "We don't need winter jackets, but only shorts," explains Nahar. Daughter Maya comes to visit two weeks before Christmas, and the family is planning a trip to the jungle on the island of Knini Paati. "This is our Christmas present," says Nahar. The way there leads by car to the last street and then on by boat. The Christmas preparations also contain the sending of 71 boxes, which also contain some festive articles and were delivered according to Suriname. "There is also a festive atmosphere here, for example with Christmas lights in the palm trees," reports Nahar.

In addition to celebrating and exploring the country, Nahar is still connected to basketball. Even if he did not come up with the intention of suriname, he is inevitably drawn to the sports halls. "New Year's Eve is celebrated really big here, you have to have experienced that once," he says enthusiastically and is looking forward to the large celebrations with music and fireworks. Despite his relaxing way of life, Nahar knows about the differences between Germany and Suriname; The country faces challenges, but the beauty of nature and reunion with relatives offer many special moments.
