UNHCR warns: Return to Syria remains dangerous and insecure!

Laimgrubengasse 10, 1060 Wien, Österreich - in Syria, the Situation is catastrophic: 90 percent of the population rely on humanitarian aid. There is no water, food and medical care, and the security situation remains critical. The UN Refugee High Commissioner UNHCR therefore demands that the states not make hasty return decisions with regard to Syrian refugees. Especially in Austria, where the authorities have announced the first disclosure procedures of the asylum status for Syrian refugees, the reluctance is advised. Christoph Pinter, Head of UNHCR Austria, explains: "Docation procedures are currently clearly premature. Currently, a safe return to Syria is not possible." Here he emphasizes that such procedures should only be initiated in the home country in fundamental conditions, which is currently not the case, since the situation has not improved, like ots.at reported.

The UN has sent employees to the Syrian borders to observe the currents of returnees and exits. It is emphasized that it is not a "forced" return. After Assad's fall on December 8th, some European countries have suspended their asylum procedures for Syrian refugees and announced return programs. Germany has also stopped the decisions on returns for the time being. Before the civil war, which started in 2011, millions of Syrians fled to safer neighboring countries. This urgent topic, which also increases the uncertainty among Syrian refugees, provides according to Deutschlandfunk dar.
