Top -free future: Regional project revolutionizes horticulture!
A groundbreaking project for reducing peat in garden products starts in Germany. Under the title "Collar-free climate-friendly planting substrates from hydro and pyro foals" (Topko), researchers develop the University of Oldenburg Should replace raw material. The initiative, which will run until April 2027 and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture with 633,000 euros, aims to reduce CO2 emissions that arise from traditional peat mining. Many common potting soils consist of this environmentally harmful material, which is why research is all the more important.
consciously rely on the participants in a regional circular economy. Instead of using imported porcelain substances, you can win materials from green cuts and agricultural waste in the region. Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Michael Wark is examined how different plant and hydrocohlen can be used as a substitute. In greenhouse attempts, the researchers test the new peat -free substrates before they want to implement the results on a large scale in agriculture and private horticulture.
promotion of insect variety
At the same time, the EU project Beespoke causes a stir, which wants to promote the pollination by insects in Europe. In view of the alarming decline in pollinators such as wild bees and butterflies, this project is intended to develop new seed mixtures and recommendations for farmers. Funded by the Interreg program "North Sea" with 4.1 million euros, 16 partners from six North Sea Anrainer countries combine to revitalize insect population. The botanical garden of the University of Oldenburg plays a key role and works on the optimization of seed mixtures for grassland. While Topko priority is reducing CO2 emissions, BESPOKE has the goal of increasing biodiversity-both projects are decisive for the environment and future agriculture, as the University of Oldenburg reports.
