Onion market 2023: Fun, music and security in Weimar!
The Weimar onion market is one of the oldest folk festivals in Thuringia and is a highlight of the event season. This year the festival takes place from October 11th to 13th and not only attracts locals, but also numerous visitors from the area. On the occasion of the market, all sorts of activities are planned that combine both tradition and modernity.
As in previous years, the festival will open on Friday at 12 p.m. The mayor of Weimar and the newly elected onion market queen Sarah II will officially open the market with the symbolic interscitation of the onion cake. Around 400 retailers will build their stands on the market itself, among which there are also 50 heldters onion farmers. The typical red and white onion stews made of herds of dogs are a must for all visitors.
arrival and parking spaces
The city administration of Weimar recommends using the P&R car park in Humboldtstrasse when visiting the onion market. Due to the limited parking facilities in the city center, this is the best option. Alternatively, the Erfurt railway and Abellio Rail Central Germany are available to offer additional train connections, including night express for the return trip towards Erfurt, Jena and Kranichfeld.
For those who want to travel by car, there is the opportunity to park on Herrmann-Brill-Platz, whereby parking fees of ten to twelve euros are incurred here. Disabled parking spaces are also available in the arable wall, Hummelstraße and Vorwerksgasse. Taxis can be used in Heinrich-Heine-Strasse, and special city bus lines are also set up to regulate the traffic volume.
Another important information concerns the onion market run, which traditionally takes place on Saturday. Here, more than 2,000 runners can go on the 11 -kilometer route, while the children's runs start at 9:30 a.m. The start and finish area is located on Goetheplatz, where a relay race will also take place over 2 x 5.5 kilometers.
security measures
In view of the latest security situation, the city of Weimar has announced more security measures for this onion market. A knife ban this year applies and tightened pocket controls are intended. Visitors are not allowed to bring any dangerous objects such as knives or similar weapons, and the sale and the carrying of glass bottles are prohibited in the entire festival area. These measures are part of a more comprehensive security strategy that also includes the doubling of the passage barriers and a stronger presence of the police and security forces. In addition, there is an increased number of visitors in the entire onion market area, even without concrete suspicion. To secure the event, Goetheplatz is completely cordoned off to ensure the safety of all visitors.
For the small emergencies, the organizational office for retailers and traffic can be reached under phone numbers 03643/762 482 and 03643/762 448. The police can be found on Kirchberg 1, while the fire brigade is stationed on Kromsdorfer Straße and can be contacted under the numbers 03643/555 555 or 112.
The festival itself offers a diverse program of entertainment, with music, dances and other performances on various stages in the city center. A very special location this year is the "onion alm", which will be in the parking lot in front of the Hotel Elephant. In addition, a ferris wheel is installed on the rolling ground, which will offer a great view of the celebrations.
Last but not least, the youth onion market "Paula Palooza" will also take place on Friday and Saturday at the Jakobskirchhof, where young bands can use the stage for their appearances.
