Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel: A fairy tale conquers Weimar again!

Weimar, Deutschland - In Weimar, the famous opera "Hansel and Gretel" by Engelbert Humperdinck is re -staged under the direction of Hasko Weber! This production, which was premiered on December 23, 1893, has established itself as an integral part of the pre -Christmas game plan over the years. Weber, who has headed the German National Theater since 2013, brings a breath of fresh air to the classic fairy tale that tells of the confrontation between childlike innocence and mythical evil.

Humperdinck's work, which is often referred to as "Wagner Light", offers a unique mix of folk songs and a clear, harmonious structure. While Wagner's music often sinks into sound worlds, the good over evil tries here. The staging shows the protagonists, played by Sayaka Shighima (Hansel) and Natalie Image (Gretel), as hyperactive children who have to fight with the challenges of their world. The stage, designed by Thilo Reuther, is kept in bright colors and transforms the witch house into a shrill fair.

a spectacle of emotions

Although Weber staging is often perceived as gross and exaggerated, the music of Humperdinck remains the true star of the performance. In the calm moments, when the children hear the cuckoo in the forest or bed for sleeping, the Staatskapelle Weimar unfolds its delicate musicality. But even in these moments, the stage is populated by restless dancers who disturb the magic of music. The final act, which ends with the children's choir of the Schola Cantorum Weimar, becomes loud and overwhelming, but the message of music remains strong and untouched.

The staging does not use political or psychological under tones and instead focuses on pure, childish joy and belief in good. In a world that is often shaped by darkness, this message could not be more relevant. Humperdinck's music, despite her simplicity, radiates hope that is also well received by today.
