Liebenrode, Deutschland - In the picturesque South Harz, a hero of the air has risen: Siegfried Picking, a 64-year-old pigeon lover from Nordhausen, managed to win Thuringia's best title in the racing pigeon breeding! Peppered with his lucky charm hobby, he not only brings joy in weddings with his flying ambassadors, but also realizes his lifelong traum in racing pigeons.

The fascination began over five decades ago when father Fritz infected his son with pigeon breeding. Already at the tender age of 12, Siegfried found his heart for the flight enthusiasts. But only now, as the season winner of his regional association, can he look forward to the powerful title - a knighthood for the Südharzer! With impressive flights, including the royal stage from Paris to Liebenrode, he sent his best females on the trip that returned in record time. The following applies: "Regular training and good food," says Siegfried, the key to success.

a heart for the pigeons

Around 100 animals live in his four pigeon strokes, with only the females being trained for the competition. The males remain as a loyal partner. This is how the breeder secures the willingness of the travel birds. "The carrier pigeon is the racing horse of the little man," explains Siegfried and gives an insight into the world of pigeon sports, which he runs with passionate commitment. But the sport is fighting against young talent, because the breeders tend to be older and the clubs are fighting for survival. The problem? A lot of time, effort and costs demand their toll.

Siegfried's wife Andrea supports the enthusiastic breeder and is pleased that your partner is always active. But the challenges are getting bigger - the racing pigeon breeding needs a breath of fresh air! With a wink, Siegfried describes the challenges that prospective breeders face: "To be successful in this sport, you have to be born!"
