Ehrenfriedhof Nordhausen: Redesign for more dignity and memory
Nordhausen. After over a year of intensive redesign, the cemetery in Nordhausen shines in new splendor! The comprehensive construction work that started in September of the previous year has now been completed. However, the official opening of the memorial location will not be celebrated until 2025, on the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp.
On this unique place in Thuringia, 2304 victims of National Socialism rest, including forced laborers and concentration camp prisoners of various origins. Mayor Kai Buchmann is convinced that the redesign not only improve the recognizability of the cemetery, but also enable an appropriate commemoration of the bereaved. The newly introduced information system should keep history alive and support learning about the atrocities of the Nazi era.
construction and design
With around 840,000 euros, the redesign was realized, financed by public funds. Important elements are now the newly created grave versions and an irrigation system for grave care. Everything was planned and implemented in cooperation with the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp memorial. Particularly noteworthy is the respect that is given to the restless souls-after all, many of these stories ended under cruel conditions in the nearby Boelcke barracks or during the war debris.
rules of conduct for visitors
- No driving with motor vehicles or bicycles on the site.
- The graves must not be contaminated or damaged.
- dogs are to be kept on a leash.
- waste must be disposed of in the proposed containers.
These rules are not just recommendations, but an expression of respect and the dignity that this special place requires. The city administration emphasizes that the cemetery of honor should be visited and used in a worthy setting. The memory of the resting there deserves the highest scoring.
