Wall and pregnancy: an unforgettable day for Simone Marx
November 9, 1989 remains a day full of surprises and emotions! Millions of people worldwide experienced the unexpected case of the wall, which brought the hearts to cheer. People fell into their arms in east and west while celebrating the incredible turn in history. The excitement was tangible when the borders opened and the people could finally get together again.
Simone Marx, then 23 years old, combined this historical day with a very personal moment of happiness: "I told my parents that I am pregnant!" The joy of new life outweighed all concerns. Only a day later did the family learn about the wall opening and immediately made their way to Berlin to experience the newly won happiness. "It was unclear whether the border would not be closed again," recalls Simone.
humility before the Monday demonstrators
Tim Neise from Hameln today is looking for traces in Leipzig, where the peaceful Monday demonstrations started. "I have humility before the people who had the courage to gather at the time," says the 50-year-old. Tino Neise, who has her birthday on October 7th, also remembers the time: "In 1989 I was the last time I celebrated his birthday with the GDR." The excitement and the courage of the people at the time are still noticeable for him.
Svenja Waldt, 19 years old on the day of the Wall Fall, the opening of the border at the small transition at Zicherie and Böckwitz experienced. "We fell into our arms with strangers because the mood was so euphoric!" The joy and mulled wine that was served as a greeting remain unforgettable. But today's society misses this swing: "We separate again instead of celebrating together," she regrets.
Torsten Hantel, who took part in the Monday demonstrations as a 27-year-old, reflects on the changes since then. "We got prosperity, but many hopes have remained unfulfilled," he says. The clear enemy image of then has given way to a confusing variety of worries that leaves many people frustrated.
