Zwickau says yes to furniture stores: chance or risk for the city?

In a crucial step for the city of Zwickau, on Thursday in the city council with a large majority for the plans of the investor, two furniture stores on the formerly industrial area on Leipziger Strasse. This decision comes after intensive discussions in which concerns about possible oversupply of furniture stores and their effects on existing retailers were expressed. Mayor Constance Arndt warned of the consequences that this development could have for the city center, since a quarter of the range of the new furniture stores are already offered in the city. However, their concerns were not shared by the majority of the Council, as Radio Zwickau reported.

The decision was clear: 38 city councilors voted for the plans, while only five were against it. The CDU had also submitted an amendment in advance and emphasized the need to generate jobs and tax revenue for Zwickau. The city council sees the settlement as an opportunity to revitalize the old industrial wasteland in Zwickau, which has been a eyesore for the city for years. The city council from the AfD, Andreas Wolf, pointed out that there was no concept for the development of the area for 30 years and welcomed the courage of the investor, who could possibly increase Zwickaus attractiveness. At the presentation it was also mentioned that Gera was in discussion as a possible alternative for the investment, Zwickau should pronounce a no, which underlines the urgency and importance of this decision.
