Vandalism in Gera: Memorial wreaths for pogrom victims destroyed!

In a shocking incident in Gera, East Thuringia, commemorative wreaths for the victims of the pogrom night of November 9, 1938 were damaged and stolen. These wreaths were laid down at the monument of the former synagogue room during a memorial event. The city administration confirmed on Friday that the Gera criminal police have now initiated investigations and is urgently looking for witnesses to find the perpetrators.

GERAS Mayor Kurt Dannenberg (CDU) was outraged by the "absolutely unacceptable and targeted destruction". He emphasized that this is not only a criminal act, but also an emotional cut for the citizens who had come together on November 9 to commemorate the past and to stand up for peaceful coexistence.

vandalism and right -wing extremist activities

The city of Gera is not only in this worrying trend. In Hildburghausen, several buildings, including a high school and the town hall, were smeared with right -wing extremists last weekend. A plaque for the victims of the Nazi November pogroms was also not spared, and a wreath stored there was damaged. In Weimar there was also another incident in which a stranger made the lettering on a stumbling block for Holocaust victims with an angle grinder. Such deeds are not only an attack on the culture of remembrance, but also an alarming sign of increasing vandalism and intolerance in society.
