The pilgrimage route extends over a total length of 400 kilometers, of which 330 kilometers lead through Hesse. Voluntary helpers who are referred to as "sprayers" receive stencils, spray cans, hammer, nails and logo badges to check the markings on site and, if necessary, to renew.

The sections of the route to be checked are usually between seven and twelve kilometers long. The "Lutherweg 1521" was opened in 2017 and follows Martin Luther's traces on his way to the Reichstag in Worms in 1521. While 38 path sponsors were still active for the Hessian kilometers in 2017, due to age and illness, there are currently only 28. These sponsors are responsible for maintaining the markings and removing overgrown signs.

New path sponsors are incorporated directly on site by taking the part of the path together with experienced sponsors. Larger damage can be reported to the association of the association in Romrod. The association receives numerous inquiries about distances and accommodation options, which indicates a high frequency of the pilgrimage route.
