Student numbers in Göttingen: A ray of hope for the Georg-August-University!

in Göttingen, a city that is particularly known for their high number of students, are some changes. In recent years, the Georg August University has recorded a continuous decline in the figures of enrollment. The reasons for this were diverse, but the University of Applied Science and Art (HAWK) and the private university of Göttingen (PFH) are better. While the HAWK and PFH have a stable or upward trend in the number of students, Georg-August-Universität, which is traditionally the largest university in the region, has difficulties.

According to the current information from the Georg August University, a total of 4680 new students have enrolled for the upcoming winter semester 2024/25, a slight increase compared to 4660 in the previous year. Among these new ones are 3407 freshmen, which for the first time enter university education. Despite this cool number, the total number of students with just under 27,400 is slightly behind the previous year's value of 27,600. However, this development is not considered final, since the numbers are expected to rise in the course of the semester, possibly up to 28,000. In 2017, a record was reached with around 31,650 students, which has not been achieved since then.

Hawk: Location Göttingen fully utilized

The HAWK in Göttingen is now also an increase in the number of students. There are currently 2180 students in Göttingen, an increase of 109 students compared to the previous year when it was 2071. A total of 1571 new students started studying at the HAWK, based on preliminary counts. It is particularly noteworthy that the figures at the Göttingen faculties remain stable, while growth was mainly carried out in the central units in Hildesheim and Holzminden. There is already a high demand for the courses at the health campus in Göttingen, so that further applications can no longer be taken into account in terms of the recording capacities.

PfH Göttingen: Student numbers increase

The PFH states that it also has an increase in the number of students. Around 4,700 people currently study, which corresponds to more than 800 new enrollings. The private university is therefore becoming increasingly popular and continues to stabilize in the region.

The developments at the universities in Göttingen are an interesting indicator of the current state of university formation in Germany and reflect the challenges that universities look for today while they are trying to meet their students.
