SPD in Baden-Württemberg: Esken as a hope for the Bundestag election!

In Schwäbisch Gmünd, the Baden-Württemberg SPD chose its top candidate for the upcoming Bundestag election on February 23, 2025 at the state party conference: Federal Chair Saskia Esken received impressive 88.6 percent of the vote and leads the state list. In her speech, she encouraged her party colleagues not to lose the courage and was optimistic: "I am very convinced: We can win this choice on February 23 if we fight", as she emphasized in her application claim. The delegates expressed their approval with 280 out of 316 valid votes, while nine abstentions and 27 negative votes were noted. The SPD is intended to give the SPD tailwind, because the surveys see the party on the upper, although it only comes to around 15 percent in the current surveys, which is a decline compared to the last federal election, as [State Gazette] reported.

The upcoming duel is not without a challenge. The deputy state chairman Jasmina Hostert spoke in her greeting plain text: "We are not in pole position". This honest assessment reflects reality, but also underlines the goal of regaining the trust of voters. If the SPD continues to lose ground, it could be difficult for the party to survive in the election. In his speech, the state chairman Andreas Stoch stated that the Bundestag election had to be seen as a choice of direction and opposed the economic policy of the CDU candidate Friedrich Merz. "We do not have to leave Germany to those who offer yesterday's solutions," he warned, and demanded more justice in tax policy for weak and medium -sized population. The upcoming election will be decisive to secure the position of the SPD in the federal parliament and convince the voters of their plans to become a strong faction, as [Tagesschau] reported.
