Summer time in danger: Germany hesitates, other countries act!

The discussion about the time change in Europe remains tense, while some countries have long since no longer adjusted their watches. In the night of March 30th, most of the EU countries will be introduced to summer time by presenting the clocks at 3:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. A corresponding proposal for the abolition of this half-yearly changeover was already approved by the EU Parliament, but so far there is no agreement between the Member States, as oe24.at . While Hungary resists each other in the role of the EU Council Presidency and the EU Commission, countries such as Ukraine, influenced by the war, abolished summer time in the previous year and will implement this measure for the first time in March.

This development is remarkable, especially if you look at the history of summer time in Europe. The time change was introduced in 1973 to save energy and to optimize the use of light. While countries like France and Italy have been actively turning the clock since the 1960s, Germany was a late bloomer: here the summer time was only introduced forever in 1980, although there were first attempts in the Empire in 1916. The reason for the later implementation in Germany was in the oil crisis of 1973, which increased the need for energy saving, such as mdr.de Nevertheless, there is increasing criticism of the time change, since the promised energy -saving effect is considered questionable and negative effects on the human biorhythm have been determined.

In the course of these considerations, it remains to be seen how the EU countries will decide on the time change in the future. In times when many countries are already pursuing innovative solutions, the pressure on the EU is to find a clear and uniform regulation. While most EU countries capture the classic summer time, the discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of this tradition can no longer be ignored.
