HSV fails in the DFB Cup: Freiburg stops the upswing!
Shock for the Hamburger SV! In a gripping DFB Cup-Tue-round game, the red pants in the Europa Park Stadium against SC Freiburg had to accept a bitter 1-2 defeat. After a disastrous performance against Elversberg on Saturday, when they were 2: 4, the HSV wanted to show that they could do it better. But despite a combative performance, it was not enough to defeat the Breisgauer. Referee Felix Brych, who has already been awarded twice as a world referee of the year, provided heated discussions, especially after a disputed penalty whistle.
The HSV started with a changed list and brought six new players. Captain Sebastian Schonlau, who was closed in Elversberg, celebrated his 100th competitive game for HSV. The Hamburgers started strongly and had a good chance of Davie Selke in the fourth minute, but was parried by Freiburg goalkeeper Florian Müller. But the joy did not last long: just ten minutes later, Matthias Ginter Freiburg put a header in the lead. The 2014 world champion used the inattentiveness of the Hamburg defense and met unhindered.
Controversial penalty and a glimmer of hope
Before the Hamburgers came at the half -time break, a controversial penalty whistle caused excitement. Maximilian Eggestein fell in the penalty area after a duel with Daniel Elfadli, and Brych immediately pointed to the point. Vincenzo Grifo safely converted and increased to 2: 0. But after the half -time break, the HSV came back! Jonas Meffert, who played for Freiburg between 2016 and 2018, headed Miro Muheim after a corner and brought the red pants back into play. Despite the rearing, the Hamburgers were unable to equalize. Freiburg managed the game Clever and did not let the HSV be developed.
In the final phase, the HSV tried everything to achieve the balance, but the chances remained unused. Marco Richter slipped in a promising position, and a spacer shot from Dompé landed directly on the goal. In injury time, the HSV demanded a penalty, but this also failed to materialize. With this defeat, the HSV is leaving the DFB Cup and now has to prepare for the next league game against form strong 1. FC Nürnberg.
