Do dogs need a coat in winter? Experts clarify!

In the cold season, many dog owners apply to warming clothes for their four -legged friends. But is that really necessary? "Usually not," explains Thomas Steidl, specialist veterinarian for small and pets. Dogs have a fur that protects them both in summer and in winter. It keeps them warm and dry, even in frosty temperatures.

However, there are exceptions! Races such as the Husky or the Labrador have a thick underdress that protects them from cold. But for dogs that come from warmer regions, such as greyhounds or Rhodesian Ridbacks, a dog coat can make sense. Older or sick dogs in particular need additional protection, because "dogs without fur freeze extremely quickly," warns Nadia Wattad from the German Animal Welfare Association.

Smaller dog breeds are particularly susceptible to cold and can quickly cool down. They often tremble and are at risk of suffering from hypoglycemia. "Small dog breeds don't necessarily need a coat if they have fur accordingly," emphasizes Wattad. But when it comes to the cold, movement is the be -all and end -all! Dogs should not stand still to avoid cooling, especially after bathing.

road salt is another problem that can affect dogs. It can make the paws brittle and lead to painful injuries. "The reaction of the animals to road salt is different," says Steidl. Dog shoes are often not the solution because they can be uncomfortable. Instead, he recommends treating the paws before and after walking with a special balm to protect them.

The feed rations remain unchanged in winter, unless the dogs spend many hours outside. In this case, your energy requirement can increase. For cozy dogs that move less, it can even make sense to reduce the amount of feed. So keepers should pay good attention to their animals to offer you a warm and safe winter experience!
