Dikes on Sylt free again: walks after a blue fuss crisis possible!
Sylt, Deutschland - The good news for all walkers and cyclists on Sylt: The dikes are released again! After weeks of blocking due to the dreaded blue, the popular paths can now be used again without restrictions. The state company for coastal protection, national park and marine protection Schleswig-Holstein has announced the return to normality-and that is a reason for joy!
The closures that came into force at the end of September concerned a total of 15 kilometers of dike from Morsum to Rantum Becken. This drastic measure was taken to minimize stress for the already weakened animals. The blue-tongue disease, which has been rampant in Schleswig-Holstein since August, has already cost many sheep and increased the worries of the farmers immeasurably. The Situation was so serious that the ministry advised to vaccinate the animals and many farmers followed this call.
Blue -tongue disease: a serious problem for the animal owners
The first confirmed case of blue-tongue disease was reported on August 8 in Schleswig-Holstein. The situation was particularly tense in the districts of Dithmarschen and Nordfriesland. The disease, which primarily affects ruminant animals, meant that many animals died and carcass had to be disposed of. The farmers were under immense pressure, while the infection figures in September led to a massive dike closure of around 90 kilometers. But the situation seems to be stabilized: At the beginning of October, the first declines of the number of cases were reported, which enabled the gradual release of the dike.
Now people on Sylt can finally enjoy the fresh air and the wonderful view, while farmers can breathe a sigh of relief that the worst times may be behind them. The return to normalcy on the dikes is a ray of hope in the middle of the challenges that the blue -tongue disease brought with it.
