Attention: Hasenpest in Schleswig-Holstein-hunter must act now!

Eiderstedt, Deutschland - alarm level red in Schleswig-Holstein! A terrifying case of Hasenpest has been discovered and the Ministry proposes immediate precaution. Attention hunters and animal lovers: touches with rabbits, rabbits or other rodents who are found apathetic or dead should be avoided. This warning also applies to animals that have lost their natural shyness. Health is at stake!

The shocking news has come after the first positive tests since the 1990s. Of the 13 examinations carried out in 2014, a hare has now been positively tested for the feared tularemia. This zoonose caused by the bacterium francisella tulensis can be transferred to humans by the animal. Even the smallest amount of the pathogen can lead to an infection - a real risk for everyone who comes into contact with wild animals!

What is Tularemia?

tularemia, also known as a rodent plague, is a serious threat. The transmission is not only through direct contact with infected animals, but also by consuming insufficiently caught meat. Even frozen venison can remain contagious for months! The symptoms are alarming: flu -like symptoms, skin ulcers and even pneumonia can occur. It becomes particularly dangerous when the lungs are affected - here the disease can be fatal, but can be treated if reacting quickly.

The past few years have shown that the spread of the tularemia under rodents is not particularly strong, but the danger remains. In Lower Saxony, over 2,200 rabbits and wild rabbits were examined between 2006 and 2009, and the results were alarming: the pathogen was detected in 30 animals. The health authorities are required and the population must remain vigilant!
