Summit cross on Helgoland: A new highlight for tourists!

On the North Sea island of Helgoland there is now a summit cross that magically attracts the eyes of tourists! In the middle of the flat landscape, the cross rises 61 meters above sea level and offers a breathtaking sight. The Pinneberg, the highest elevation of the island, is not only a geological miracle, but also a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers. The idea for the summit cross originally came from a joke among friends. Until 1998 the Pinneberg was nameless and only marked by a surveying point. But then mountain hiking fans from Itzehoe proposed to build a cross in order to humorously underline the belonging to Helgoland to the district of Pinneberg. Since then, the summit cross has been an integral part of the island and attracts numerous visitors every year.

The original wooden cross was replaced by a weather -resistant metal cross in 2000 to withstand the rough conditions of the island. On the Pinneberg there is also a summit book in which visitors can register. This tradition has established itself, and often the entries are given a humor. The municipality ensures that the fully written books are exchanged and kept.

Helgoland recently struggled with a dangerous invasion: a poisonous pest threatened the flora of the island. Despite these challenges, the Pinneberg remains a popular goal for tourists who want to experience the unique combination of nature and history.
