Storm floods on the Baltic Sea: Current water levels and warnings for Kiel!

Kiel/Eckernförde/Fehmarn. Between July 2022 and June 2023 there were already five such storm surges - and in the 2021/2022 season there were even seven! Low water is also not a foreign word: two low water events were recorded last season. Current water levels from the Kiel Bay, Eckernförde, Rendsburg and Ostholstein are now of great importance!

The current levels are crucial to assess the risk of floodings. Sturm floods are divided into four classes on the German Baltic Sea coast: a “storm surge” begins at 1.00 to 1.25 meters above the middle water level, while a “very heavy storm surge” goes beyond 2.00 meters. This classification is important to pronounce warnings in time and to protect the population!

Current flood warnings

The flood center is the first point of contact for warnings in an emergency. There are special flood registration services in every federal state that become active with rising levels. How the population is warned is regulated in the civil protection and disaster relief law. Warnings can be spread via radio, television, sirens and even social media!

But what to do with an impending flood of storms? It is important to prepare yourself in time: park electricity and gas, secure important documents and create food supplies! In the event of evacuation, handy luggage should be provided in order to be able to act quickly in an emergency. The risk of flooding is real, and everyone should know how to protect themselves!
