Sylt, Deutschland - The municipality of Sylt voted on the evening of December 19, 2024 with an overwhelming majority for a new administrative model. With 21 yes and seven no voices, the representatives of the municipality of Sylt (district of North Friesland) spoke out for the creation of a uniform administration on the entire island. This decision was accompanied by the already approving municipalities List, Kampen, Wenningstedt-Braderup and Hörnum. Sylt: an island in change

The municipality of Sylt, which is located in the center of the North Sea island of the same name, formed through mergers, whereby it emerged on January 1, 2009 from the Association of Westerland, Sylt-Ost and Rantum. With 13,679 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2023) it covers almost 60 percent of the island area. The island is not only known for its beautiful beaches, but also for its complex administrative history, which was repeatedly influenced by resistance from individual communities, as the previous attempts at merger show. The headquarters will take place in the former town hall of Westerland after a uniform decision, supported by citizen offices and branch offices. In particular, the districts of Keitum and Munkmarsch work closely together. The reforms aim to increase the effectiveness of the administration and to meet the common needs of the Sylt population.
