Kegel seals on Helgoland: Young animals for the first time!

The cone seal season on the Helgoländer dune has started with an exciting bang! The first sweet young animals were spotted and the community of Helgoland and the Jordsand association are thrilled. Since the first birth in the winter of 1996/97, the number of gray seal jungles has increased annually, with impressive 700 to 800 newborns in recent years!

The small seals are born in the winter months from November to the end of January. Due to the high birth rate, the young animals are no longer counted every day. Instead, an estimate is published at the end of the throwing time, based on land -based counts. This time is not only a festival of nature, but also a challenge for visitors who want to experience the seals up close.

Attention visitors: Bowl seals need rest!

The first weeks of life of the cone seals are crucial, because the small animals are particularly sensitive to disturbances. With its long, white lanugofell, which is not water -repellent, you have to lie on protected beach sections. This woolen fur keeps you warm on land, but quickly sucks in the water, which makes swimming difficult and impaired thermal insulation.

The bowling robe, the largest predator in Germany, is under nature conservation and is supervised on Helgoland by a cooperation agreement between the Jordsand association and the municipality of Helgoland. Visitors can explore the dune and the throwing places of the cone seals along the "winter experience path" with special viewpoints without adding unnecessary stress to the animals. A unique experience that puts the beauty of nature in the foreground!
