Cranberrys on Sylt: Conservationists fight for endangered plants!
The invasive cranberry from North America has spread to Sylt and ensures an alarm mood! This plant has overgrowed the dune vines for years and displaces the domestic plant species. But conservationists have teamed up and do everything they can to recapture nature. For around a decade, the largest German North Sea island has been freed a small area from this threat with a special Rupf campaign in the island south.
Manual work against the superiority of the cranberry
"The main goal is to get the tendrils in so that they do not hike from Dunental to Dünental - this is best possible," explains the expert. The cranberry not only spreads through its berries, but above all over the tendrils. Six times a year, always in October and November, is called up in Hörnum for the "cranberry rump" campaign when the berries are ripe. Up to 20 Sylter and vacationers then help to save nature and protect the domestic plants.
