Lack of apprenticeship in Lübeck: Young people have to be active now!

Lübeck/Kiel. Alarming developments on the apprenticeship market! In the district of the Lübeck employment agency, which comprises the Hanseatic city and the district of Ostholstein, the number of apprenticeships offered has fallen heavily! From October 2023 to September 2024, only 3,128 training positions were reported to the agency - a dramatic decline of 14.5 percent compared to the previous year. At the same time, 2,602 young people tried to support the career counseling, which corresponds to an increase of 14.5 percent. The uncertainty is growing!

Markus Dusch, the chairman of the management of the Lübeck employment agency, explains: "Companies react more than the economy." However, many companies also seek contact with young people via schools and trade fairs at an early stage in order to fill their positions directly. Nevertheless, there are still 526 training offers more than young people seeking training! A ray of hope in a worrying location.

Tendency in the chambers: slightly declining

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) and the Chamber of Crafts report a decline in new registrations! By October 31, only 516 new training contracts in Lübeck were recorded - a minus of six compared to the previous year. Professions in food craft are particularly affected, but also in the metal and hairdressing industry, the number of trainees goes back.

The IHK reports 941 training contracts for Lübeck, which corresponds to a decline in 29 contracts. 633 contracts were registered in Ostholstein - a decline of 59! Companies from many industries cannot fill their apprenticeships because the applicants are missing, especially in retail, the hotel industry, gastronomy and logistics.

Nationwide are still many apprenticeships free

There are still many training positions available nationwide! Of around 17,500 training positions, 3,260 are still vacant. Nevertheless, there are numerous applicants - around 1,700 young people are still looking for an apprenticeship! The employment agency warns: "Anyone who leaves school in 2025 should now start with the applications!" The future of young people is at stake!
