40 years of fire protection education: Möllner fire brigade honors her heroes!

In the heart of Mölln, the volunteer fire brigade has undergone a remarkable evolution since 1984, which has shaped the way of life and safety. At that time, in August, the fire chief Günter Scholz, together with his wife, who works as an educator in kindergarten, developed an innovative concept for fire protection education. The idea was presented to the military leader Willi Damm and his deputy Torsten Schöpp in September of the same year. The concept had its premiere on October 30, 1984, where 20 children visited the Möllner fire station and received the first basic lessons about fire protection.

The entire Möllner community, including daycare centers and schools, was gradually integrated into the program. Not only was a one -off training offered, but the concept was continuously developed in order to meet the needs of the respective institutions. Already in 1990 it was recognized how important smoke alarms are - a topic that was explained during parents' evenings to raise awareness of fire protection in the families.

Over time, the offers of fire protection education consolidated and were wider. From 1991, fire protection teachers took part in project weeks in various schools and gradually expanded their offer to more and more educational institutions. As a result, schools such as the Tanneck primary school and the Schäferkamp secondary school were also included in the programs.

A milestone was the intensive training for the employees of the BFA Clinic in Hellbachtal, which took place in 1992 and is considered an initial spark for fire protection education in companies and nursing homes. Since then, more and more institutions have contacted the fire brigade to train their employees in dealing with fire extinguishers and the behavior in the event of fire.

The committed work by Günter Scholz and Arne Sommer is a crucial drive behind the success of this program. Many comrades convinced their passion and conviction to also commit themselves and to support the important task of fire protection education. The exchange with other fire brigades, for example from Zewen and Fulda, also strengthened the expertise of the Möllner team.

In 1998, Günter Scholz played a new role as a trainer in the field of fire protection education and remained a volunteer until September 2024. His commitment to the training of new fire protection teachers contributed to the continuous development of the program and at the same time highlighted the fire brigade in Mölln in the region.

in 2000, Günter Scholz said goodbye to his position as a specialist in fire protection education, but was preserved for the team. Arne Sommer took over the leadership role in 2006 and has steadily expanded the network to the schools since then. Today, not only primary schools and daycare centers, but also secondary schools and special schools are integrated into the programs.

The efforts and the immense use of Günter Scholz and Arne Sommer did not go unnoticed. As part of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the Mölln volunteer fire brigade, the two were awarded the German Fire Brigade Cross in Bronze, an honorable recognition of their outstanding services in fire protection education. This award illustrates the influence that its work on the safety of the Möllner citizens has and should serve as an incentive for future generations to campaign for fire protection education and education.
