A life between water and land: Holger Rahf, Flensburg's hostel father

Holger Rahf, a name that stands in Flensburg for many unforgettable memories! Born in Kappeln in 1954, he left impressive traces in the city for over five decades, both on land and under water. His journey began in the idyllic surroundings of the Schlei, where he learned to swim as a child and discovered his love for water. After his school days in Kappeln, he moved to Flensburg, where he started training as a surveying technician and finally gained a foothold in the public service.

The professional career of Holger Rahf is characterized by its passion for water. After completing his training in 1976, he worked in the Office for Rural Areas, where he knew the Schleswig-Flensburg region like his pocket. But the real turn came when he took over the management of the Jugendherberge Flensburg with his wife Birgit. For almost three decades, the couple was the soul of the house, known for their warm hospitality and the unforgettable experiences they offered their guests. The two created an atmosphere that attracted both families and groups of children from the big city and kidnapped them into nature.

But Holger's passion is not just limited to the hostel activity. He has been an enthusiastic diver for over 50 years and has completed over 3000 dives during this time! His fascination for the underwater world began in the Free Bathing Institute of his childhood, where he took the first steps under water. Holger is not only an active member of the local diving club UC Baltic, but also worked as a chairman for many years. After a devastating fire that destroyed the club rooms, he and his colleagues succeeded in creating a new, modern location for the association that was inaugurated on time for the 50th anniversary.

In addition, Holger is involved in the support association for the historic engine ship "Gesine" and the tractor "Flensburg". Here he takes care of the preservation of these maritime treasures and ensures that they are ready for events and trips. At the age of 70, Holger Rahf still feels full of energy and joie de vivre, ready to experience new adventures and continue to follow his hobbies with enthusiasm.
