Storm deep Bernd: Chaos on the west coast - emergency services overloaded!
Storm deep Bernd is currently causing considerable severe weather warnings on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein. Northern Dithmarschen and North Friesland are particularly affected, where hurricane gusts were reported at speeds around 110 km/h. During the night, the police recorded 62 storm -related missions, while the fire brigade reported a total of 78 missions since Monday afternoon. These were mainly fallen trees, flying around Christmas trees and branches that blocked the streets.
The dangers from the gusts of wind are expected to stop until the early Tuesday evening. In the meantime, there were also other traffic disorders. A lock gate of the north lock in Brunsbüttel was damaged by a collision with a freighter on January 2, 2025, which leads to longer waiting times at the North Ostsee Canal. Provisional use of the lock gate is only possible for low water, while there is a risk of demolition in the event of floods. In addition, the ferry on the North Ostsee Canal in Sehestedt cannot be used for car traffic due to hydraulic problems. To remedy these problems, the ferry will be taken out on Tuesday morning from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
damage in Kiel and the surrounding area
in Kiel and the adjacent circles Plön and Rendsburg-Eckernförde had to move out for several hundred missions on Monday evening and on Tuesday night. A total of 81 missions were reported, including 24 in Kiel, 15 in Plön and 42 in Rendsburg-Eckernförde. Most of them were security measures that aimed to secure the falling trees and loose roof tiles. In Kiel, several stored Christmas trees were blown away by collection points, while a tree fell on two cars in Stromeyerstrasse.
The storm also meant in Todenbüttel that a corrugated iron roof was raised by a garage, which forced the residents to temporarily leave the house. In Neumünster, a scaffolding collapsed in the Anscharstrasse, but no larger missions were reported. Railway traffic was also affected: trains had to drive at reduced speed, which led to delays of up to 90 minutes. However, the clean -up work in rail traffic is currently completed, and train traffic is largely normal again. In parts of the northern Schleswig-Holstein, windy weather with storm gusts of up to 90 km/h is still expected in parts of the northern Schleswig-Holstein.
