Pharmacy death in Schleswig-Holstein: How many still stay?
Schleswig-Holstein faces a worrying economic imbalance at his pharmacies. According to a report by ndr , about a quarter of all pharmacies in Schleswig-Holstein have closed in the past ten years. The causes are diverse and include acute lack of young talent and increased costs. A concrete example of this difficult location is the pharmacy in Rieseby in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district, which may soon have to close its doors.

This problem is reflected in the entire federal territory. As Tagesschau reported, 384 pharmacies in Germany have already closed since the beginning of 2024. At the end of September 2024, only 17,187 pharmacies remained, which corresponds to a decline of 2.2 percent compared to the previous year. In 2010 there were still 21,441 pharmacies, which illustrates the drastic decline in recent years.
The reasons for the death of pharmacy are increasing personnel and material costs as well as delivery bottlenecks and a shortage of skilled workers. Many pharmacists are increasingly opting for other career paths, for example in industry or in hospitals. In addition, the number of new pharmacies has dropped, in the first quarter of 2024 there were only 36 new foundations compared to 48 in the previous year.
The ABDA calls for political measures to combat the decline in pharmacies. In particular, President Gabriele Regina Overwiening expresses concerns about the planned reforms of Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach, which contain a relief of the establishment of new pharmacies and the approval of pharmaceutical-technical assistants (PTA) as a replacement for pharmacists. At the moment it is necessary that at least one licensed pharmacist is on site.
