Dahle near the outside: river bed track becomes new and ecological!

In the village, the Dahle has recently flows in a redesigned river bed. This change not only ensures new aesthetics, but is also the result of important ecological measures. The new river course, which is now 1120 meters long, wanders further away from the adjacent land, which is a direct reaction to the earlier straightening of the river in the 1920s.

The changes are related to the conversion of the flood polder, which is planned in the region. As the State Tall Classification Administration (LTV) reports, the renaturation of the Dahle is a significant measure in order to maintain ecological functionality in the "Dahle-Exchange" protected area. The course of the river was created in such a way that it now meanders, which means that it meanders into gentle curves and thus presents a more natural river.

Dahle receives a new river bed

As part of the renaturation, a trapezoidal profile was replaced by a flat and wider river profile that gives space to natural river development. This tactical decision enables the Dahle to move through landscapes and create new habitats for different animal species. In order to maximize the ecological advantages, additional structural elements such as gravel benches and vegetation rollers were installed in the river.

In order to meet the new culinary needs of the wildlife, the LTV monitors the development of the river nature and explains that the new elements offer "suitable breeding habitats" that will have a positive effect on local biodiversity.

Innovative construction projects on the Dahle

The current state of the project also includes the construction of a ford, which should enable the meadows between the new and the old river course to be managed effectively. This ford is not only used to reach the adjacent meadows, but should also act as an overflow trough for rainwater, which will support the flood relief. It initially sounds paradoxical that the old river, which was partially filled, can take on such a function, but the engineers have found a well thought -out solution for this.

With the shift of the new river, away from the properties, it was necessary to renew the rainwater removal systems. A new collector near the revised business route ensures that rainwater is efficiently derived.

The Dahle is a popular water for fishing fans. The Leipzig Angler Association was involved in the discussions in the course of planning the renaturation. Matthias Kopf, who is responsible for the water economy, expressed that the ecological state of the river has now been improved. Be it still uncertain whether the anglers will find enough suitable places in the new river course, he emphasizes that it is still too early to make a statement about it.

The developments on the Dahle are part of a larger project that not only changes the landscape, but also contributes to protecting the environment and improving the quality of the water living space. These steps are essential innovations in the area of outside, which are supposed to bring back the natural processes of the river and promote their biodiversity.
