Refurbishment of the Meißner Cathedral: 380,000 euros for the southwest tower!
In the charming city of Meißen, these days begin significant restoration work on the imposing Meißner Cathedral, which is considered one of the historical landmarks on the Elbe. In order not only to keep the monument to stand, but also to expand as a tourism magnet in the coming decade, the first work on the Südwest Tower was initiated on Tuesday. The financial framework for these measures amounts to around 380,000 euros.
The Meißner Cathedral will celebrate its 1100th anniversary in five years, which makes the need for this maintenance work all the more urgent. The two 81 -meter -high, neo -Gothic twin towers of the cathedral have shaped the city's skyline since 1908 and have become an integral part of the historical site. The associated work platform, which was recently installed at a height of 43 meters above the cathedral square, enables the necessary renovation work without damaging the sensitive sandstone structure.
conservation measures in focus
Friederike Hartmann, the spokeswoman for the Hochstift Meißen, explains the reasons for the current measures: "It is the renovation of damage in the masonry of the neo -Gothic part of the west towers, which were caused by weather influences." These efforts are not only important for the aesthetic preservation of the cathedral, but also for its long -term stability and security.
Responsible for the use of the new crane system and the assembly of the platform is the local company ARTHEA from Radebeul. In an interview, Michael Schwabe, the managing director of the company, emphasizes the innovative construction: "The crane system and the platform are not drilled, but is trapped. This way, the sandstone of the cathedral is not damaged during the work." An important aspect that protects the integrity of the historical building.
Financial support is largely from government funding: around 340,000 euros, which corresponds to 90 percent of the total costs, are provided by the State Office for the Preservation of Monument Saxony. The Meißen Hochstift contributes its part with a further 40,000 euros, which makes a share of ten percent and underlines the responsibility of the local carrier.
After the first preparations were carried out to ensure the protection of the cathedral facade, the actual renovation work for November is planned. This will not only contribute to the preservation of the cathedral, but also pave the way for future generations that want to admire this magnificent building.
