New bike path in Meißen: Safe to the Elbe without detour!

in Meißen, a city in Saxony, there is gratifying news for cyclists. The city has released part of Gerbergasse for opposing bicycle traffic. As a result, cyclists can now drive directly from Neugasse to the Elbe without having to turn into the Hahnemannsplatz. This change is a significant improvement for the safety of the cyclists, which were previously often faced with conflicts between cars and cyclists at the Hahnemannsplatz.

The new markings along Gerbergasse extend from the Roßmarkt to the Kleinmarkt/Martinstrsbrücke. In striking places, as on the small market, there is now a division that enables cyclists to either turn right onto the Martinsbrücke or to the left into the small market. This direct access facilitates the way via Heinrichsplatz to the Altstadtbrücke and further to the Eleberadweg.

More security for cyclists

In cooperation with the working group cycling and Wegenbund Sachsen, the road traffic authority has intensively looked for a solution to increase the safety of cyclists. "The new regulation is the only sensible and safe way for cyclists from the Triebischtal to the city center," emphasizes the working group. This shows the endeavor of the city to create an infrastructure that not only makes cycling more secure, but also more attractive.

It is important that cyclists give priority to the car traffic, which is currently driving straight on Gerbergasse. Motorists should make sure not to run the markings when turning left into Gerbergasse. In addition, parking in Gerbergasse must pay attention to keeping an eye on the bike track when you get out to avoid accidents.

Neugasse has been released for opposing bicycle traffic since 2018, and the figures show that there have been no accidents in connection with this regulation since then. This speaks for the successful implementation of safe traffic routes in the city.

Cooperation with the Wegenbund and state recommendations

The decision to open Gerbergasse again shows how effective the cooperation between the city of Meißen and the working group of Saxon municipalities is to promote cycling and foot traffic, road volume. Frank Kutzner, Managing Director of Wegenbund, is positive about the development: "Demand in cycling continues to grow, also in Meißen. Whether bike tourism along the Elbe or daily paths by bike, the direct routes are crucial for the attractiveness of cycling."

The city receives further support through evidence of the Saxon State Ministry of Economics, Labor and Transport. In a message, the opening of one -way streets is recommended for cycling. This should not only improve the direct connections for cyclists, but also increase overall safety in road traffic. The prerequisite for this is, among other things, that the speed limit is no more than 30 km/h and there are sufficient encounter widths.

The implementation of these projects shows that the city of Meißen, together with the responsible institutions, continues to work to improve the conditions for cyclists. The measures of the past few years, including the modern infrastructure, ensure that Meißen will be an increasingly safer place for cyclists, as reported on www.stadt-meissen.de .
