New asylum home in Thekla: A look behind the scenes of the accommodation

Leipzig. A new asylum in the Tauchaer Straße in Thekla is about to open up to 120 refugees from different countries Offer at home. On Saturday, the city opened the doors of the new community accommodation to give residents an insight into the living conditions of the asylum seekers. The two newly built buildings, which seem simply and inconspicuous, are ready for the move -in, which should begin on December 2nd.

The facility, which was originally planned as a senior apartments, offers 29 residential units, each equipped with the kitchen and bathroom. The rental costs amount to 390,000 euros per year. Social welfare manager Martina Kador-Probst assures that primarily families from Syria, Venezuela, Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq will move in to dispel the concerns of the residents. The equipment of the apartments is simple, with the focus on durability and care.

DRK ensures security and neighborhood

The German Red Cross (DRK) takes over the operation of the accommodation and attaches great importance to a good neighborly relationship. Olaf Hagenauer, board member of the DRK Leipzig, emphasizes that the residents will have contacts at any time. The facility is monitored by a security company around the clock to ensure a safe environment. This year Leipzig has already reorganized 1,500 refugees, and the city is faced with the challenge of continuing to find suitable accommodation, while the costs for the supply of unaccompanied minor refugees have risen sharply.
