Left in Saxony: Departure after loss of election - new strategies required!
In a decisive moment for the Saxon left gathered around 200 delegates to their state party conference on Saturday in Neukieritzsch near Leipzig. After the dramatic losses in the state election in early September, where the left received only 4.5 percent of the vote, the party is faced with the challenge of consolidating its position in the Saxon state parliament. Thanks to two direct mandates, the parliamentary group remains in parliament, but the strategic orientation is now of the utmost importance. An urgency application will address the demands of the six MPs against a possible CDU/SPD minority government.
social justice in focus
The head of the state Susanne Schaper emphasized the need to talk in the future double budget to prevent cuts in the social sector. She calls for an immediate program to restore the infrastructure, especially for the badly damaged Dresden Carol Bridge, as well as the preservation of all hospital locations. Her co-chairman Stefan Hartmann put social justice at the center of his speech and demanded: "There should be no billionaires." The left wants to fight against inequality with all his might.
originally a new election of the management duo Schaper/Hartmann was planned, but political turbulence at the federal level thwarted these plans. The decision on the future leadership of the left in Saxony will now be postponed to after the early Bundestag election in February. The Leipzig member of the state parliament Juliane Nagel was optimistic about the growth of over 1,200 new members since the beginning of the year.
federal political influences and strategies
federal politics plays a central role at the party congress. The new federal chairwoman Ines Schwerdtner, who has only been in office for a month, spoke about the departure in the party and the preparations for the Bundestag election in February. She emphasized the need to defend the welfare state against the Union under Friedrich Merz and called for the nationalization of energy and housing groups. Schwerdtner made it clear that the left would not be on one leg like a flamingo, but would pursue a double strategy to win both direct mandates and five percent in the second votes.
